Are you fluent in Amharic and passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and families? The Centre for Autism Services Alberta is seeking dedicated Volunteer Interpreters to support our diverse community by breaking down language barriers and fostering understanding.
About the Role:
As a Volunteer Interpreter, you’ll join our clinical team to provide interpretation services during home visits or virtual meetings via Zoom. Your role will be crucial in ensuring effective communication between the clinical team and families, helping create a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Activities Involved:
-Offer interpreting services both in speech and writing during client meetings.
-Translate and prepare documents under the guidance of staff.
-Facilitate structured conversations by adhering to the meeting framework provided.
-Respect the cultural practices and environment of families during interactions.
-Build trust and understanding between families and clinical professionals.
-Debrief with the clinical team after each session to improve outcomes.
Skills Required:
-Language Proficiency: Fluent in both Amharic and English (spoken and written).
-Communication Skills: Clear, respectful, and empathetic.
-Professionalism: Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
-Cultural Sensitivity: Respect for diverse cultures and practices.
-Flexibility: Comfort working remotely via Zoom.
Educational Background (Preferred): Students or professionals in healthcare, psychology, education, or related fields.
Time Commitment:
Two 1.5-hour meetings per month.
